You can make changes to your Canvas Profile and Notification Preferences within your Account settings. Your profile controls identifying information about you, such as your profile picture and your biography. You can use notification preferences to set up different ways for Canvas to contact you with information about your course and to decide how often you will receive these notifications.

How to Update Your Profile

You can change your profile photo and add a personal biography in the Canvas Profiles area. To access it, click the Account tile on the Blue Global Navigation Bar. Then, select Profile from the fly-out menu [1]. To change your profile picture, hover over it and click on the pencil icon that will appear [2]. Then, follow the instructions to choose a photo from your computer to take one with your computer's webcam. To edit your Biography or to Add Links, click on the Edit Profile button on the far right-hand side [3].

How to Add or Change Email Addresses and Phone Numbers

Once you have changed your profile picture, you can add a different email address and other contact methods to your Canvas account by clicking on the Settings link within your Account [1]. On the right-hand side, you can add additional email addresses (such as your personal email) to Canvas by clicking the +Email Address link [2]. You can also designate a preferred email address, which will be marked with a star. Note that you cannot delete your FSCJ official email address from Canvas. In the Other Contacts area, you can add additional contact methods, such as phone numbers, so that you can receive course notifications by text message [3]. Note that your contact methods will always remain private, so adding a contact method to Canvas for the purposes of receiving notifications does not provide other Canvas users with access to your phone number or personal email address. To change your Canvas System Language and Time Zone, click the Edit Settings button [4].

How to Change Your Notification Settings 

When you've set up the communication methods that you would like to use with Canvas, you can decide how and how often you will be contacted when things change in your courses, or when due dates approach or assignments are graded. 

To do this, go to your Account in the Global Navigation Bar and Click on Notifications [1]. You will see a chart of that lists a bunch of icons in columns. The columns indicate different communication methods that you've set up in your Canvas account. In the example below, the user has an their FSCJ e-mail pre-set, an extra email address set, then downloaded and enabled the Canvas App.

In each column, a series of symbols indicate how often this user would like to receive notifications about different Canvas events via that method.

Each notification is set to a default preference. To change a notification for a contact method, locate the notification and click the icon for the contact method [1].

To receive a notification right away, select the Notify immediately option [2].

These notifications may be delayed by up to one hour in case an instructor makes additional changes, which prevents you from being spammed by multiple notifications in a short amount of time.

To receive a daily notification, select the Daily summary option [3]. You will receive this e-mail around 6:30 PM daily.

To receive a weekly notification, select the Weekly summary option [4]. The date and time of your weekly notifications are posted on Saturday around 6:30 PM.

If you do not want to receive a notification, select the Notifications off option [5].

Unsupported notification types display the Unsupported icon [6]. Unsupported notification types cannot be enabled.

View Account Notification Settings

When making choices about your preference settings, note that you are required to manage all communications within your Canvas courses and that your ability to do so can have a strong impact on your success in your courses. 

Course Level Notifications

You can also change your notifications for individual classes. If you want to get notifications for your discussion posts in one course but not any other courses, you can navigate to your course to change them individually.

To do this, navigate to your course by using your dashboard or using the Courses button on your blue FSCJ bar on the left. Once navigated to the course, on your right side you will see the button View Course Notifications.

Select this and you will see that the screen looks just like your account level notifications and works similarly. However, one big difference between course level and account level notifications is that there’s a master switch that can disable your notifications for the entire course.

Manage Notification Settings

We do not recommend this option and advise you to leave the course level notifications option on and adjust your notifications individually.
